There were some tremendous performances from the boys most notably in the relays, and we look forward to further success against Woodcote on the 24th of May.

Wacky Races!

Sunday afternoon came with a little sunshine for a change. Perfect excuse to get outside and have some fun. An unorthodox house challenge was the result with some very wacky house races. Crabtree were the eventual winners.

At one point we had the home side 58 for 8 but they rallied to post a total of 91 for 9.

Sunningdale's batting was confident and fluent and with the loss of only three wickets, we overhauled their total in only 16 overs.

The History of everything

Last Wednesday, We were incredibly fortunate to have Christopher Lloyd talk to us about the "history of everything."

He brilliantly highlighted twenty groundbreaking moments and discoveries from the beginning of time to the present day that changed the world we live in forever, and all in an hour and half! It was an inspirational lecture and one which the boys loved. We very much look forward to having Christopher back at Sunningdale next term where he hopes to educate us about the complete history of sport!

Christopher is the founder of What on Earth Publishing Ltd, the company behind the What on Earth? Wallbook. His books include: What on Earth Happened? and What on Earth Evolved? Christopher divides his time between writing books, journalism, and lecturing mostly in schools, museums and literary festivals.

1st XI win their first game!

The 1st XI recorded a gritty but satisfying win against Brockhurst yesterday. Some excellent bowling and a fine performance in the field saw the opposition lose 10 wickets for 34 runs. The small total was eventually reached, despite the loss of some early wickets and whilst there is plenty of room for improvement this early result bodes well for a promising season.

Adventurer Alastair Humphreys comes to Sunningdale!

We were very lucky to have Alastair Humphreys at Sunningdale last night. Both parents and boys were blown away by her performance and the performance of her accompanist Christopher Guild. To have two musicians with such an abundance of talent, playing exclusively for the boys, was a real treat and it will no doubt have inspired many to take up an instrument.... or for those who already have to keep practising!

Having lost heavily to Woodcote in the first encounter between these two teams the boys were determined not to roll over and take another beating. The game was a very physical encounter but the team spirit and determination was visible to all and they thoroughly deserved their win. The Woodcote win was of course enjoyable, but the match against Ludgrove was simply the proverbial icing on the cake. The boys played their finest game of the term beating a very strong Ludgrove side. It was not necessarily the prettiest of games, but the sheer desire to give their all provided us with a most enjoyable 5 - 0 win. A trip down to Northbourne Park on Wednesday resulted in yet another fine performance and the boys ran out victors 31 - 7. This is becoming a season to remember!

Trip

Today, as part of their project on Catholic Christianity, boys from IV and VA travelled to London for a tour of Westminster Cathedral and the London Oratory Church. After attending Mass in Latin, the boys were shown around the Cathedral by Fr Alexander Masters, the Precentor, who spent a good deal of time answering the boys' many intelligent questions. The boys then ascended the 100 metre tower to enjoy spectacular views over the capital. After a walk past Buckingham Palace, lunch in St James' Park and a walk to hear the Jubilee Bells in Parliament Square, we were given a wonderful tour of the Oratory by Fr Edward Van der Burgh, including the opportunity to see many of the Church's beautiful and priceless treasures in the Sacristy. The boys were enchanted and behaved beautifully.

Accompanied by his mother and younger brother, Archie had an audience with the whole school in the library...a daunting experience for one so young! The boys asked him a few questions, gave him three hearty cheers, and wished him luck as he and his family set off for America for what we all hope will be a life-changing operation. We also took the opportunity to announce the total raised so far by the boys of the school. As of today the boys have managed to raise an astonishing £17,541.30!

Once again, a massive thank you to the boys, parents, family, and friends who supported the "Walk for Archie"..it really has been an incredible effort.

Archie is at a local school and he suffers from cerebral palsy. His family needs to raise £50,000 to pay for an operation that could change his whole future.

Every boy, and a number of parents walked six times around the grounds, a total of about 4 miles. Some boys finished very quickly and walked an additional four laps! Hot chocolate with chocolate chip cookies was on offer for the boys after they had completed half the distance.

The whole atmosphere was fantastic and we will have raised a sizeable amount towards the cost of Archie's operation.

Rugby Results 18/01/12

The rugby term has got off to a flying start with wins against Brockhurst for both the 1st XV and the 2nd XV; the mighty 3rd XV also returned victorius from their battle with St.Georges Windsor.
We always have, at the remembrance service, a reading from the School Notes about an Old Boy of the school who is remembered on the memorials in the chapel. This year, the reading was of the exploits of one G.B. Having left Sunningdale after a weekend of temperatures in excess of 27 degrees, the rain and mist of the Welsh coast came as a bit of a shock to the system.

We stayed at Orielton field studies centre, a charming old manor house, set in beautiful grounds close to the town of Pembroke.

Our time was well filled while we were there, and a great deal of Geography was covered. We began on Monday afternoon with a case study on the oil refineries of Milford Haven, and then made some preparations for the main event of the trip, the river study.

We began Tuesday, in the clouds, close to the highest point of the Preselli mountains, and followed the course of the Afon Syfynwy downstream, recording data as we went. The day ended with everyone in the river at the final site getting rather wet, and we were certainly glad to get back to the centre for a change of clothes and some supper.

The trip ended with a study of Microclimates around the grounds of the field centre on Wednesday morning.

A great time was had by all despite the weather, and the top year can now turn their attentions to writing up their projects for Common Entrance.

After a picnic lunch in the woods surrounding Le Molay-Littry, we visited a disused Coal mine, once the mainstay of the area's economy, and learnt how the mining methods developed over the years.

The day was rounded off with a short lesson and a visit to the beach in glorious September sunshine. We enjoyed an excellent supper of Beef Stew, and made our preparations for departing in the morning.

Our thanks go to Mr and Mrs Dawson for organising such an excellent trip, and for looking after us so well while we were there.

Next came a visit to a Cider farm where the proprietor gave us a tour, and explained the process of making Cider and Apple Juice. At the end of the tour a tasting was held and a vote taken on our favourite variety of Apple Juice; this was so that we could buy some to have with our supper later on.

After a picnic lunch we made our way to the town of Trevieres, where the boys had a worksheet to complete, some of the questions requiring the gathering of information from the local townsfolk. One group, on approaching a likely candidate for questioning were surprised to discover that he was the mayor - the very man they were trying to find out the name of. After our visit to Trevieres, we returned to La Vacquerie for another lesson, and then enjoyed some free time and a game of Football on the beach before supper.

After a delicious breakfast of fresh Croissant and Pain au Chocolat, the day began with a visit to the Omaha beach museum, where the boys learnt about the American landings on D Day.

This was followed by a picnic lunch on the beach and a visit to the gun emplacements at Pointe du Hoc, where many of the casements still remain. A visit to the American Cemetery which overlooks Omaha beach was a poignant reminder of the thousands who died in the name of the allied forces, and the day was rounded off with a visit to the gun emplacements overlooking Juno beach in the British sector.

Sunningdale has received yet another very positive review by Tatler's School Guide, in which we are described as a school that "packs a powerful punch, with better pastoral care and greater academic achievement than many of its larger competitors."

It goes on to state that Sunningdale is a school "with lots to shout about".....so we thought we would do exactly that! The full review can be found in this month's magazine. That's all the shouting for now!

A new term brings a new batch of Sunningdalians, quite a lot of them this term actually!

Music Theory Results

Last Term, nearly every boy in the school sat a music theory examination. The results are just in, and they are very good indeed.

87% of the boys passed their examinations of various levels, 26% of those with distinction, and a further 37% with merit.

This is a huge credit to the boys, and to the music department which goes from strength to strength every term. A huge proportion of boys at Sunningdale study at least one musical instrument, and a great many sing in the school choir, which has just returned from a very successful tour of Berlin.

Choir Tour to Berlin

Choir Tour 2011 - Berlin, Germany

It was an incredibly early start for the school choir on 30th June, as we boarded a coach at 4am and made our way to Gatwick. The boys were excited and remarkably alert for that time of the morning, despite many of them reporting that they hadn't slept at all.

We landed in Berlin and were greeted with a cooler and duller weather than we'd had in London. On all but one of our days in the city we had rain, but this did not dampen the boys' spirits or ruin the fantastic days out we had planned. During our trip we visited the Berlin Wall Memorial, Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, The Reichstag, took a boat tour on the river Spree, spent a day in Berlin Zoo, visited the German Science and Technical Museum, listened to demonstrations in the Musical Instrument Museum and walked through the Jewish Holocaust Memorial. The boys had a wonderful time and found the history of the city very interesting.

Most importantly though, the boys did themselves proud and their singing was stunning. They performed a Latin mass setting by the French composer Leo Delibes as well as motets by Cesar Franck and Richard Dering. They sang mass at St Hedwig's Cathedral and at St Afra's Church in the city and were extremely well received. Special mention must go to the soloists who performed with confidence and who have worked hard to learn their parts. Every single boy has had to work extremely hard this term to learn the tour music as well as having to learn the other very challenging anthems for our own school chapel services. They have been stretched musically this term and have risen so brilliantly to every challenge I have thrown at them.

This tour was a huge success. The boys conducted themselves in a way that we're always very proud of at Sunningdale. Huge thanks must go to Mr and Mrs Hagg Davies who have been a huge help in planning elements of this tour and who treated us to our boat tour and the tour of the Reichstag. We look forward to planning next year's tour, but we have a job on our hands if we want to beat this one!
A total of 18 different senior and junior schools took part in a grueling challenge, consisting of several team and individual rounds. After a long day the results were announced and Sunningdale came second, only beaten by a very strong team from St. Paul's. This is a fantastic effort and could secure the team a place at the national finals later on this year. Very well done to all the boys involved.

1st XV Match Report

The 1st XV's season just keeps getting better and better with a fantastic victory over Ludgrove 22 - 12. In a scrappy game Sunningdale displayed glimpses of brilliance to secure a very good win and all sights are on Dorset House next Wednesday. A win will secure a winning season with two games in hand. Come on Sunningdale!

What a game!! In conditions not dissimilar to the Somme, the mighty men of the 1st XV took on a Horris Hill side that has had a very successful season. We knew that this was going to be tough and so it proved. Horris were deservedly ahead at half time but Sunningdale struck back early to set up a thrilling second half. Despite the difficult conditions, the handling was good and the ball was spread nicely. Sunningdale took the lead and the supporters thought they were in for a victory until Horris Hill struck twice to make victory seem beyond us with the score at 24 - 35. Sunningdale showed unbelievable spirit, though, and ran in two very late tries to take an incredible win 38 points to 35.

Both sides deserve great credit for a rugby game that will live long in the memory.

On the back of a fantastic win against
Bruern Abbey (71 – 5) the boys were chomping at the bit for the
away fixture against Cothill. Whilst they were confident, they were
also extremely focused and determined to head back down the M4
victorious. The conditions were a little heavy under foot but it was
the perfect start. We received the kick off and sprinted the entire
length of the pitch to give Sunningdale an early lead, which was
converted with aplomb. As the first half played out the commitment
and discipline shown by the forwards in particular was truly
remarkable and the backs showed great skill, running some wonderful
lines. The boys were to run in a further six tries before the half
time whistle blew; outstanding performances coming from all.

Despite the lead the boys were hungry
for more, wanting to implement everything they had been practising in
training. The second half would follow a similar pattern from the
first, with a further six tries being run in; with some sensational
runs from some of the backs. Despite our dominance, Cothill were
resilient to the very end and when we missed a few tackles on
Cothill’s try line, their left wing ran the entire length of the
pitch to score an incredible individual try. The final whistle blew
and the boys had recorded another fantastic win; however, conceding
in the last play of the game had left a very sour taste in their
mouths. Whilst they were happy with the win they were incredibly
frustrated, a clear indication of how proud they are to be wearing
the jersey. This can only stand them in good stead for the rest of
the season. A superb performance boys, well done.

A big thank you must go to Cothill for
their wonderful hospitality and also to all the Sunningdale mums
who made the long trip to come and support, it makes a huge
difference.

1st XV Match Report

Another well deserved victory for the 1XV, however, this was not achieved with the same flair and brillo associated with previous games. It was an all too gritty encounter. The 1XV insisted on making fundamental handling errors all over the park, and whilst never really looking in danger, it seemed that we never really got out of first gear and were happy to play at the pace the opposition felt comfortable with. Having said this, there were some outstanding individual performances, with the full back striking fear into the hearts of the opposition and our number 8 finishing his tries with aplomb. Improvements needed, but a good win nonetheless.

They have gelled together as a team and are learning quickly. Our aspirations seemed misplaced when Bruern ran in a try in the first minute, one boy running through far too many tackles. We picked ourselves up though, and started to concentrate. The forwards were powerful and we camped in their half, but too many mistakes were made and it took us a long time to level the score. We crossed their line again in the first half but managed to drop the ball so honours were even at the midway point. In the second half we played much better rugby, the rucking was excellent and it gave the backs an opportunity to run at our opposition. We consistently made good ground and the tries were scored by out powerful props. Some defensive tackling was required at times but they were up to the task and ended deserved victors with a score of 21 - 7.

On a wet and inhospitable day the 1XV
travelled to Bruern Abbey, hoping for a reversal of the fortunes that
had denied them victory last Saturday.

            Bruern had been unbeaten at
home for the last two terms and this was the culmination of their
season and the biggest match on their calendar. They were a tough nut
to crack and it seemed like we were in for an unpleasant afternoon as
the scores read 0 - 0 at half time. We had defended like lions, but
just could not seem to get any continuity in our play and kept
dropping or losing the ball at the most vital times.

           However, just after the
restart our forwards picked up the ball and sniffed the merest of
gaps , charging through the opposition for a try, the skipper,
slotted the conversion and we suddenly looked like we might win. It
took a matter of seconds to realise that Bruern had vastly different
intentions, and were not going to let their unbeaten record slip away
from them without a fight. Our defence was truly astonishing,
repeatedly repelling the onrushing walls of attackers, five penalties
were given against us on our five metre line, the citadel stood, but
it seemed that we could not continue to withstand such pressure. With
great relief we strung together a little attacking play of our own
and this resulted in a try in the corner. The last ten minutes felt
like it was 10 hours, but we kept fighting and the final whistle was
greeted with a mixture of relief and joy that we had brought Bruern's
proud record to end.

          Bruern were wonderful hosts
and we can only thank them for being such gentlemen in defeat. A
fantastic game and memorable afternoon. Well played the 1XV.

During the first half we looked second best as their backs dominated play with some good running rugby. Our forwards were not quick enough to make the most of our clear strength advantage and positionally we were a little weak in the three quarters. We went in to half time 0-12 down. The second half was much better, though, and we had the advantage of playing slightly downhill. The pack were much more committed and there was some terrific tackling from all members of the team. The tries were well worked and both were converted to give us a lead at the end of the game of 14-12. There is plenty to work on but this was an encouraging start.

The boys scored six tries which were created by a combination of some strong forward play and some powerful penetrating runs from the backs. The commitment shown by the boys bodes well for the future but there is still much to do if we are to make this term a successful one. trip by being awarded "Show Ups" and "Work Stars" and the top fourteen
become this term's Possibles. They were treated to popcorn and a Film

The annual Sunningdale's Got Talent competition, now in its third year, was also a great success. There was much talent for the judges to filter through, but in the end, the new Darling - Gajland trophy, very kindly donated by a parent of last year's winning act, was won by our star trumpeter for his performance of Chanson Napolitaine.

Well done to all of the boys for taking part, and well done the staff band for a warming rendition of Queen's "Somebody to Love".

Carol Services

The carol services were once again a triumph this year. The choir excelled themselves under the direction of Mrs Spencer, and the staff were in excellent voice. The number one favourite among the staff and boys was "Riu Riu Chiu", a lively Spanish carol, which was sung with great vigour. Special thanks go to Mr Elgie for stepping in at the last moment to play the organ. Well done to all of the choir.

Choir CD

The new Choir CD has finally arrived and sounds amazing. These will be on sale at the school for £10, which can be added to the school bill. Get your orders in now for Christmas presents.

Talk by Hektor Krome

The whole school enjoyed a talk by travel enthusiast Hektor Krome. The talk was entitled "The World on a pound a day" and illustrated his beliefs that the world and its culture is best enjoyed when one is immersed in the local way of life, rather than staying in expensive hotels. The boys were enraptured by his stunning photographs, and there were too many questions afterwards to deal with. Many will have been inspired to spread their wings in future years.

Remembrance Sunday

The remembrance service on Sunday was a poignant memorial of wars past and present. The choir sang beautifully, and Mr Galbraith added to the event with his haunting melody on the bagpipes. Once again our star trumpeter performed the last post in truly professional style, and many agreed that they'd not heard it done better in a prep school.

Bonfire Night

Yet another superb bonfire night fireworks display - possibly the best yet. Thanks to all of the parents who turned out to make this such a memorable evening for the boys.

Football Success

a great success! The boys sang in some beautiful gothic churches and
cathedrals in Normandy and enjoyed some fun days out on the beach, at
a theme park and in the historical town of Bayeux.

The choristers of Sunningdale's Chapel
Choir sang masses in Bayeux and Caen, performing music by Peter
Hurford, Jonathan Willcocks and Cesar Franck. A great weekend was
enjoyed by all. We were welcomed warmly by the church of St Patrice
de Bayeux, and invited to return to sing in the future. Singing in
the Abbey in Caen was a fantastic experience for the boys, but
challenging due to the sheer size of the building. Their hard work
was rewarded by some fun days out. Given the success of this tour, we
are already beginning to plan for a bigger tour next year, perhaps to
include some secular concerts. Huge thanks must go to Mr and Mrs
T.M.E. Dawson for spoiling us with their wonderful hospitality and
food during our stay at La Vacquerie.

Common Entrance Results 2010

The Common Entrance results have come

published in a writing anthology to be distributed to several
libraries throughout the country, including the British Library.

It was a terrific contest with some classic football from both sides. The game, which ended in a very satisfactory 6-6 draw, was followed by a slap up tea.
